Acklam FC v Coulby Newham ‘C’
24th September 2006
Acklam played their first home league match of the season against a strong Coulby Newham ‘C’ team in an early season top of the table clash. The match started at a frantic pace but Acklam settled quicker and the pace and passing from midfield created a number of openings, however the inability to hit the target, together with some fine goalkeeping from the Coulby keeper kept the scoreline blank.
Acklam where to rue the missed chances when Coulby broke the deadlock with a stunning strike from outside the area that flew into the top corner of the Acklam goal. It was now an evenly matched contest and the first half drew to a close with the majority of the play being fought out in the midfield.
Half time:- Acklam 0 v Coulby Newham ‘C’ 1
The second half started in much the same vein as the first with both teams battling for every ball. Coulby’s well drilled defence and midfield were more than matched by Acklam’s midfield, where Alex Hamblen, Liam Hogg, Liam Talukder, Jordan Wales and especially Joe Stubley, who must have covered every blade of grass, battled for every loose ball.
The goal Acklam had been looking for, and deserved came when Adam Lane latched onto a through ball and outpaced the Coulby defence to finish clinically.
This goal gave Acklam extra confidence and again the Coulby goalkeeper was put under pressure but Coulby held firm.
The game was now end to end and strong tackling from both sides showed neither team was prepared to give an inch. Acklam almost went 2-1 ahead when Liam Hogg saw his shot beat the keeper but hit the post. Acklam continued to press and went 2-1 ahead when a cross into the box was met by Josh McDermott to finish clinically.
Both sides now pushed forward with chances being created at both ends. Tough tackling from both sides ensured a busy afternoon for the referee. Acklam almost went further ahead when Alex Hamblen was unlucky to be adjudged offside.
Both teams continued battling, and a hard fought contest finished with Acklam achieving a hard earned victory.

Another great performance from the whole squad, after going a goal behind their heads never dropped even when it looked as though it wasn’t going to be their day.
They never stopped battling, and fought a hard working and well organised Coulby team all the way to achieve the victory their performance deserved.
M.O.M. The whole squad - impossible to single out any individual, an excellent squad performance.
