HEIGHINGTON v ACKLAM

Sunday 8th October 2006

After last weeks cup exploits it was back to the league for Acklam and they travelled to Heighington for their longest journey of the season.

The early stages of the game were scrappy, with both sides unable to put any decent passing moves together. Acklam couldn’t get to grips with the game, and this together with Heighington’s hard work made it difficult to create clear cut chances. As the half wore on Acklams passing improved, but any chances they created were foiled by either good goalkeeping from Heighington’s keeper or unusually sloppy finishing.

Heighington’s forwards struggled to trouble Joe Parkin in the Acklam goal as the impressive Acklam backline worked hard.

Acklam eventually got the break late in the half when Josh McDermott was played through and finished well. Another chance came his way just before half time and again he finished well.

Acklam upped their game in the second half and they started to pass the ball well. This created openings for the forwards and midfield, Adam Lane scored from one of these openings to make the score 3-0.

Heighington tried their best to fight back, but again Acklam’s hard working backline stood firm. Heighington were unfortunate to concede another goal when a tremendous ball into the box was turned into his own net by a Heighington defender.

Alex Hamblen then opened his account for the season with a tremendous strike to put Acklam 5-0 ahead. Heighington continued to fight and almost scored when one of their forwards tried to lob Joe Parkin in the Acklam goal but he made an excellent save. Acklam pushed on again and clever wing play by Jordan Wales set up Liam Talukder who scored with a well placed header.

Heighington created another chance and a shot from the edge of the box seemed destined for the bottom left hand corner only for substitute keeper Michael Easton to fling himself along the ground to make a tremendous save and keep the ball out.

Acklam got a seventh goal when Jordan Wales fired in a free kick from outside the box.

Heighington’s players fought to the final whistle but Acklams hard working midfield prevented them from creating any more openings

Another excellent result with every member of the squad playing their part. Acklam struggled to get a foot on the ball in the early stages as Heighington fought for, and chased every ball. Once they scored the first goal they settled down and took control of the game.

It was good to see the midfield chipping in with goals, as well as setting them up. The defence again looked impressive, praise must also go to the goalkeepers who kept their

concentration to make excellent saves.

M.O.M. – Robert Maynard played his part in an excellent defensive performance, made decisive interceptions and cleared his lines well.
