ACKLAM FC v HEIGHINGTON
Sunday 1st April 2007
Acklam’s game this week was at home to Heighington. After losing the last two games they were looking to bounce back against a Heighington side who had their best win of the season last week when beating Saltburn.
Acklam kicked off and went straight onto the attack, the move broke down and the resulting clearance was picked up by the Heighington attacker whose pace surprised the Acklam defence, he ran into the area fired the ball past Joe Parkin in the Acklam goal, fortunately for Acklam his shot went past the post for a goal kick.
This set the stage for the game with both sides always looking to attack. Acklam pushed forward with both wide getting decent possession, good balls into the box were proving a test for the visitors defence, the game wasn’t going all Acklam’s way as the Heighington’s strikers pace continued to cause problems for the Acklam defence.
The breakthrough for Acklam came on 10 minutes when a ball from midfield found Josh McDermott in the area who finished well.
Heighington didn’t let this setback affect their play and they continued to attack the Acklam defence. Their enterprise was rewarded on 15 minutes when an Acklam defender handled the ball in the area and the referee awarded a penalty. Unfortunately for Heighington the resulting penalty struck a post and Acklam were first to the loose ball, Adam Lane picked up the clearance midway in his own half and sprinted to the Heighington area, his cross found Alex Hamblen six yards out who guided a header into the net for Acklam’s second goal. This was tough luck on Heighington who from being a post width away from being level now found themselves two goals down.
Both teams continued to attack and both defences had to be on their guard to prevent more goals. Heighington’s defence were finding Acklam’s wide men a handful. Late in the half a cross from Jordan Wales was headed into the net by Adam Lane for Acklam’s third goal.
Half time Acklam 3 v Heighington 0.
Heighington kicked off the second half, and as in the first half attacked Acklam. This was proving to be an end to end game, much of Acklam’s threat came from the wings, much of Heighington’s came from their pacey front man. Acklam scored their fourth goal of the game after 35 minutes when Adam Lane headed another Jordan Wales cross into the net.
Heighington showed their character and spirit as they continued to attack Acklam; every ball was contested in a lively midfield battle. Acklam continued to look dangerous going forward and scored their fifth goal of the game from another header, this time Josh McDermott headed in from the edge of the six yard box from a corner.
Jordan Wales, who had caused problems for Heighington all match got the goal his performance deserved when he beat the keeper with a vicious shot into the roof of the net from a narrow angle.
Heighington continued to attack Acklam, but Acklam’s strong backline were in no mood to surrender their clean sheet. An energetic and hard fought game ended with the score
Acklam 6 v Heighington 0
After two defeats in a row this was an important win for Acklam, the forwards took the chances when they came along, the centre midfielders battled well and the two wide men caused problems all match, the defence and keeper worked hard to keep a clean sheet.
Heighington can take great credit from the game, they competed for every ball, their heads never dropped even after the disappointment of a penalty miss, they played with a lot of spirit and made sure Acklam had to battle for the full match.
Well done to both teams.
M.O.M. – Jordan Wales – A fantastic performance, on this form he is unstoppable, created two goals and scored one himself.
