Acklam vSaltburn Ath
29th October 2006
Acklam lined up at home against Saltburn at the Acorn centre in this weeks league match.
Acklam kicked off and soon made inroads into the Saltburn half, but stout defending and strong running from the Saltburn midfield meant chances were scarce.
As the half wore on Saltburn got more and more into the game and took control of the midfield. Acklam still looked the more dangerous team going forward, but missed chances, and good goalkeeping from the Saltburn keeper kept the scoreline blank.
Saltburn eventually got the goal there possession deserved when a good move down the
Saltburn left wing saw their forward power into the box and slot the ball past Joe Parkin into the Acklam net. Acklam 0 Saltburn 1
This spurred Saltburn on, but Acklam still looked dangerous on the break. Saltburn weren’t allowing Acklam to settle on the ball but a good passing move from Acklam’s midfield set up Adam Lane who finished well to make the scoreline 1-1.
Acklam started winning more of the ball and an entertaining first half ended with the scoreline Acklam 1 Saltburn 1.
Acklam settled down in the second half and started to pass the ball well. Alex Hamblen and Jordan Wales started finding space on the wings but Saltburns centre back pairing kept Acklams forwards in check.
It took a tremendous goal to break Saltburns resistance, the ever impressive Alex Hamblen picked the ball up on the left wing and fired an unstoppable shot past the Saltburn keeper and into the net. Saltburn didn’t allow this goal to unsettle them however, and only two fine saves from Joe Parkin in the Acklam goal kept Acklam ahead.
The game then became the Liam Hogg show, he started to find space in the Saltburn half
and took full advantage by firing in four goals in the final twenty minutes of the game. Two well taken shots and a brave header past the onrushing Saltburn keeper took the score to Acklam 5 Saltburn 1
Saltburn didn’t give up and strong running from their forwards meant Acklam’s impressive defence couldn’t relax. Liam Hogg then took centre stage again, he scored his fourth goal, the pick of the bunch, when he planted a fantastic header past the Saltburn keeper from Liam Talukders pinpoint cross.
Both teams competed well until the final whistle
Full Time Acklam 6 v Saltburn 1
This was another excellent, hard working performance from the squad. The scoreline slightly flattered Acklam, who although deserving to win were not five goals better than a very strong Saltburn team.
It was nice to see the midfield getting goals when the forwards couldn’t make the breakthroughs. It was also good to see the forward line working as hard as they did.
Well done also to the defence and goalkeeper for another performance in keeping with the high standards they have set themselves
M.O.M. Liam Hogg – To score 4 goals against any side is impressive, to score them from midfield against a good team tells its own story. As well as scoring goals his workrate was excellent.
