“What can you say about
this squad of players? When you think back to August last year, some of
these kids had never even been on a football pitch, but as the season
progressed they have grown in stature.
This squad of players has the potential, the character and a great
mentality to go on to bigger and better things. In their very first
season they have more than held their own in a very tough league. We
can’t wait for next season to start.”
Those were the words I wrote about Acklam FC in last years end of
season
Brochure. Now I know some people might not have believed me when I made
this statement, but I could see the potential we had. The lads had to
live up to those words with their performances on the pitch. My god did
they,
WELL DONE LADS YOU PROVED ME RIGHT.
After a thumping 10-0 victory in our first game against Prissick we
followed this up with a 2-1 win against Coulby ‘C’ who had finished well
above us the previous season. This gave us the great start we needed,
followed by a winning run that took us right up to the last game before
the Xmas break. We lost a very close game 2-1 to TSC in a fantastic game
of football, meaning we had the added pressure of always playing catch
up to TSC for the remainder of the season. The lads never gave up hope
and went on to win some close games in January. After a run of cup games
came the return to TSC away, 1-0 down in the second half and with the
chance of the Title slipping away the lads dug deep and produced an
unbelievable come back to win 2-1. Sadly we lost at Hardwick by 2-1 in
our very next game to put ourselves under even more pressure. We went
into the last 3 games needing to win them all for the Title. After been
2-0 up inside 10 mins at Saltburn the game changed dramatically and with
10 mins to go we found ourselves 3-2 down. With 3 mins remaining Jordon
Wales hit a free kick from all of 25 yards into the back of the net to
keep us in with a chance of taking it to a play off game. We duly beat
Hardwick 5-1 & Coulby ‘B’ 14-1 in our final 2 league matches.
We finished the season on top of the league on goal difference, but
league rules meant that a play off game would be required to decide the
champions. On Tuesday 8th May 2007 we played TSC at Stokesley FC in a
winner takes all game. To say we saved our best performance till last is
an understatement. We hit the TSC net inside 2mins and never looked
back, ending up winning 5-0 in a fabulous show of skill, wonderful
passing and total commitment and effort. Nobody was going to deny us our
right to claim top spot.
Although the league was our main priority we also had some great cup
runs in both the North Riding & Challenge Cups, where we lost in the
semi final to a very good Nunthorpe team.
Also in Febuary this year we achieved the Charter Standard Clubs Award
after a lot of hard work behind the scenes.
My thanks go to all the squad because its easy for some to forget that
it is a squad achievement that we won a very competitive league and you
all played at part in that. You have all shown great character & mental
strength, great skill, produced some fantastic football, but most of all
a determination to win even when our backs have been up against the
wall. You never gave up and you thoroughly deserve to be called….
