Grangetown YCC v Acklam FC

League Cup 2nd Round

Sunday 7th October 2007

The second round of the League Cup saw the fourth division’s top two sides face each other.

The game was only 2mins old when Acklam opened the scoring, Jordan Wales played the ball across to Adam Lane who set up Alex Hamblen who provided a pin point cross for Jordan Wales to arrive at the far post and score.

Grangetown came back and from a free kick a header from the Grangetown forward was well held by Joe Parkin (the birthday boy) in the Acklam goal.

Acklam went two up after 8mins when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Jordan Wales powered a shot in on goal that the keeper couldn’t hold and Josh McDermott was on hand to stick it home.

4 mins later another Jordan Wales free kick was put into the danger area and Jack Cubbin was first onto it and produced a great finish to make it 3-0

Grangetown were causing some problems with a succession of corners but were not able to break down the Acklam defence.

Acklam increased their lead even further when a fantastic ball from Joe Stubley set Adam Lane clear who chipped the advancing Goalkeeper to make it 4-0.

Acklam broke away from a Grangetown corner 10 mins before half time when Sandy Davison brought the ball clear he was then fouled by the Grangetown player but the ball ran onto Jordan Wales the referee played a great advantage in allowing the game to go on as Adam Lane cut inside and tucked it away

Half Time    Grangetown YCC 0 v 5 Acklam FC

After a half time roasting from their manager Grangetown came out with a point to prove in the second half and tried to push Acklam back.

Jordan Wales had a shot into the side netting as Acklam again imposed themselves on the game. Joe Stubley and Jack Cubbin were dominating the midfield and Gavin Stubley and Sean Speight were a rock at the heart of the defence.

Josh McDermott was causing problems with some great corners and when one of these was cleared Sean Speight fired in a 30yd effort that the keeper did very well to hold.

Grangetown should have got a goal back when their forward hit the post and watched as it ran along the goal line and away to safety

Acklam then made 3 substitutions when Stephen Waite, Michael Hurndall and Robert Harrison came on for Jordan Wales, Sandy Davison and Charlie Collin.

With 15 mins to go Josh McDermott had a moment that he can talk about for the rest of his life, when from a corner he hit the side netting and actually broke the net, but I bet the story might be a bit more dramatic then that in years to come.

With 10 mins remaining Acklam completed the scoring when good interplay from Jack Cubbin Stephen Waite and Joe Stubley set up Adam Lane to complete his hat trick.

Full Time    Grangetown YCC 0 v 6 Acklam FC

A great first half display killed this game as a contest, with a second clean sheet of the season, some brilliant play and finishing. Acklam were first to every ball and this was a very impressive performance all-round

MOM: Joe Stubley a truly magnificent performance in the centre of midfield, broke up everything Grangetown’s midfield tried to do and set up a number of chances for the team. Well-done Joe
