Acklam FC v Heighington AFC
League Cup 1st Round
Sunday 16th September 2007
A windy afternoon at the Acorn Centre greeted both teams for their First round League Cup clash.
Acklam kicked off with the wind in there favour and got an early break through when Jordan Wales broke down the right and crossed for Adam Lane to side foot home at the back post. Heighington started to try to impose themselves in the midfield and had a fair bit of possession but without troubling Joe Parkin in the Acklam goal.
A great ball from Gavin Stubley set Adam Lane away down the left hand channel, he cut inside the full back and showed great composer in laying the ball back for Josh McDermott to rifle the ball home from the edge of the area with a great right foot.
Josh McDermott was causing problems with some great corners and on 16 mins Acklam increased their lead from one of them. In an attempt to clear the ball a Heighington defender helped it on into the box and Joe Stubley powered in a great header to make the score 3-0.
Acklam continued to press and a speculative shot from 30 yards by Joe Stubley, was turned over the bar by the Heighington keeper.
Great link up play on the left by Charlie Collin and Alex Hamblen saw Alex get behind the Heighington defence a cross for Adam Lane to head home.
Heighington’s goalkeeper was again brought into action when he bravely saved at the feet of Adam Lane. Lane then cut in from the left hit the bar and Sandy Davison’s shot was well held by the keeper
Half time Acklam 4-0 Heighington
Acklam started were they left off in the second half and Adam Lane’s header from a pin point Jordan Wales cross went just wide.
Adam returned the complement 4 mins later when he played Jordan Wales through who struck a sweet right foot shot into the back of the net.
Heighington never gave up and got a consolation goal when a fierce free kick from outside the box flew into the net from Foster.
Acklam made 2 substitutions with Michael Hurndall replacing Sandy Davison and Stephen Waite replacing Josh McDermott up front.
With 10 mins remaining Charlie Collin and Alex Hamblen linked up well again down the left and the cross was headed home by Jack Cubbin. Jack deserved this goal after a fantastic midfield performance that had everything.
Special mention must go to Sean Speight who had a very good game in the heart of the Acklam defence.
With 3 mins left Acklam completed the scoring when Stephen Waite and Jack Cubbin combined to cross for Adam Lane to grab his 2nd Hat Trick of the season.
Final Score Acklam 7-1 Heighington
A great all-round performance from the lads, some of the passing and moving both on and off the ball was a pleasure to watch. It’s nice to see them take what they have practiced on the training field into a game and for it to work so well. We scored 4 headed goals in this game so hard work and practise does work. Well done
MOM: Adam Lane, not only did he add another 3 goals to his collection but his all-round game in setting up and bringing others in to the game was fantastic
