Redcar Town ‘A’ v Acklam FC
Sunday 13th January 2008
North Riding Tesco Cup Quarter Final
Acklam travelled to first division Redcar Town in the quarter finals of the Tesco Cup for what promised to be a very difficult tie
Acklam started very brightly indeed and took the game to their opponents with some confident passing and moving
Acklam had a lot of the early possession but couldn’t break through a very solid defence
Just after 10mins Redcar broke away down the right and a cross was miss judged by the Acklam defence and the Redcar player struck a great shot into the corner of the net
This give Redcar the impetus to take command of the game and only a good save from Michael Easton in the Acklam goal kept the score down
Redcar hit the bar with a looping header as they went in search of a second goal
Half time: Redcar Town ‘A’ 1 v 0 Acklam FC
Acklam tried to get into the game after the restart but were been closed down very quickly by a hard working Redcar team
The game was turning into a real midfield battle with both teams not able to create any clear cut chances
Redcar were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and the shot went straight through to deceive the Acklam defence and goalkeeper
Acklam made a substitution by bringing a forward on for a defender and started to get a lot more possession and won a number of corners but Redcar’s defence were in a defiant mood
Joe Stubley had a shot just over the bar in Acklam’s only real attempt at goal
With 5mins remaining and Acklam pushing for a goal to give them some hope of getting back into the match they were caught out at the back and good combination play from the Redcar forwards resulted in a good low strike into the far corner
Full time: Redcar Town ‘A’ 3 v 0 Acklam FC
A very disappointing result but all the team can be very proud of what they have achieved in this years North Riding Cup
We have beaten 2 first division teams in this run to the quarter finals but sadly came up against a very good Redcar team in this game
We battled well on a tricky day weather wise but were beaten by the better side on the day, so no complaints from us
A special mention for Referee Tommy Turner who was fantastic throughout, he let the game flow and talked to all the players explaining decisions and giving great encouragement, I only wish all referees were as good as him.
MOM: Gavin Stubley the captain led by example and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side
