Acklam FC v TIBS
Sunday 4th Nov 2007
League Cup 3rd Round
Second division TIBS provided the opposition in the 3rd round of the League Cup this week.
The game started in a scrappy fashion with both sides not able to keep the ball for any length of time
Jordan Wales put in a great cross from the right but no one was on hand to finish at the far post.
TIBS came forward and had a shot that went just wide of the Acklam goal,
TIBS were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, this was well struck and brilliantly saved by Joe Parkin diving away to his left, but TIBS were quickest to react to the rebound and scored to take the lead.
TIBS very nearly increased their lead when a ball over the top for their forward saw him cut inside, but a brilliantly timed tackle from Gavin Stubley denied them.
Acklam attacked down the left through Adam Lane who set up Jack Cubbin who’s shot cannoned off the post and Alex Hamblen fired the rebound straight into the arms of the TIBS keeper.
Acklam were starting to get into the game more and Adam Lane’s shot went just over after a strong run.
Two minutes before half time Josh McDermott caused panic in the TIBS defence when his deep in swinging corner was meet by Alex Hamblen to head Acklam level.
Half Time: Acklam FC 1 v 1 TIBS
Acklam went at TIBS in the second half and Joe Stubley hit the woodwork with a powerful right foot shot.
TIBS were pinned back for long periods but did manage to break away a couple of times but couldn’t manage to change the score
Sandy Davison hit a good shot that Riley in the TIBS goal did very well to push away for a corner.
End of Normal Time: Acklam FC 1 v 1 TIBS
Extra Time continued like the 2nd half with Acklam having most of the play and possession but couldn’t break down a resolute TIBS defence and when they did get past the back four, Riley was in superb form to deny them, by tipping over a Alex Hamblen shot and tipping round a Jordan Wales strike.
Full Time: Acklam FC 1 v 1 TIBS (after extra time)
So onto the dreaded penalties, both sides missed their first penalties and then scored their next two. Sandy Davison scored to make it 3-2 to Acklam, then TIBS shot wide with their next attempt. Joe Stubley coolly slotted home the next one for Acklam for them to progress 4-2 on penalties.
A tough cup encounter with both sides giving everything, Special mention for Gavin Stubley, Sean Speight and Adam Lane who were the pick of the bunch for Acklam and Christian Riley in the TIBS goal, who didn’t deserve to be on the losing side after keeping Acklam out on a number of occasions.
Acklam probably just deserved to advance after dominating for long periods of the game.
MOM: Jordan Wales who was back to his best with some great wing play and some terrific free kicks.
